Correspondence Experiment

So I had an idea for an experiment covering Comicon this year.  I would post to my Facebook FandomFoodie Page in real time off of my phone.  It would allow my Facebook Followers a more vicarious experience of my trip and allow to catch my thoughts before they vanished at day’s end, when I would have time to actually start writing the articles proper.  However, after the first day I received some… discouraging feedback from other bloggers when I told them the idea.  Ones who, in hindsight, don’t write to cover events.  They said that I would be unable to properly edit the text over my phone and I would look like a fool.  Though anyone who’s seen my cinematography knows that’s never stopped me before.

And when the con was finished I was promptly bombarded with breakthroughs in job searching as well as other labors, so I largely had time for quick posts and operating Facebook from my phone anyway.  So I look around when I catch a breath and it’s suddenly the weekend in question is 2 weeks passed.  I may get conflicting signals about how soon a deadline is for covering events and still being timely, but I consider this tardiness inexcusable.  So to make it up to my Fellow Foodie Fanbase, I have compiled the entire list of Thursday Posts from Emerald City Comicon and presented them in chronological order.  Please tell me what you think.  Should I endeavor to attempt this all four days of Sakuracon over Easter Weekend?  And how would you suggest I improve in the future?  Please leave your comments below, and I’ll incorporate your input during coming events.

So the show opens at 2, and I just now heard that it was only for the art show. Also it seems I can already get laniards, programs and the rest elsewhere. Whoops. And to think I was in such a hurry. I gotta hit lunch before then.

I’ve left the line to seek out lunch, and on my way I tested my intel on the tower. Good intel, indeed.

I’m out in Seattle now so we’re going to discuss Starbucks the seventh and Pike Starbucks every Comic Con has a specialty drink created just for the convention. But this year and the last year there have been two drinks. In 2016 it was for Batman vs Superman with a drink for Batman and a drink for Superman, but this year it is one for the Hulk, and another for Groot.

As you can see I got the Hulk one. And Sakuracon faithful, I think you’re really going to like it. It’s the green tea frap with chips that we get at the specialty drink for that con, the Sakuracino. But it’s more filling and less crashing because of the added protein. Also the stronger chocolate flavor on account of the mocha drizzle. I’m not saying I prefer one or the other it’s a nice reminder. Also the other protein does make it a better lunch fare.

Also it seems this is not the only event being hosted 7th and Pike. I hadn’t heard of the other one, but it reminds me of to Past comic cons where there were two events in the same Convention Center same weekend. I’ll keep my eye out for you.

Alright, the big ticket item (so far as I’m concerned) the comic book grading process. Relocated from the location described in the cards handed out of the cons first floor, they provide a discounted service grading and packaging your used comic books faster and cheaper than one would normally find.

I still need to finish scanning some Batman issues before I Supply them, but I aim to be a paying customer myself this year.

Sakuracon 2016 Sunday Report

So I’m late getting this post out.  I’m questioning this release schedule.  I’d like your input on whether to put the next convention report forward by another series of uploads corresponding with Prereg price updates.  Or do you think I should divide it by topic?  Post a bunch of Facebook posts in real time and compile them in a list at the end of the day?  Please post in the comments.

Before we look at the events of the last day, let’s spend some time enjoying what keeps me coming back to these gatherings as much as anything else, but I’ve sadly diminished on this list.  The cosplay.

Can you believe it took three tries just to make the shot this good?

The movie Princess Mononoke (titular princess shown above) has been rereleased in various theaters multiple times as I release this chapter of my convention summary.  Did you catch the show?

Okay, can we have a discussion about Samus Aron’s wardrobe over the years?  This looks so impractical for braving the unknown compared to her badass armor.

I have to say, I really like the character design for Jinx from League of Legends here.  Her body type in the animations is very close to lots of women I’ve seen cosplay her.  She’s no Jessica Rabbit, that’s for sure.  One benefit of this is how close to the fictional thing so many Jinx cosplayers seem to be.  I wonder if that was on the minds of the designers, or if this is a result of motion capture modeling.

When I started posting pictures from the con to Deviantart, I had a small amount of tags, elaborating on them with each new picture.  I also have a habit to incorporate the typos I make into my tags.  If I’m typing these mistakes, someone else is likely to, also.  My Sakuracon 2016 Standard Picture Tags are as follows: “Sakuracon Sakura Con Devil Easter Week End Weekend Goof Fri Fry Day Friday Ash Wednesday.”  There are obviously other tags attached, but this  set is found on them all.

Also in preparation for the con, I put out a survey.  I posited the following questions to several people and here are the responses I got.  Not just by Sunday, but also overall.  As you can see, I only had 2 responders, but if you’d like to add your thoughts to the mix, there’s an empty questionnaire below.  I invite you the copy it, fill it out with your thoughts, and post your answers below.

What advice do you have for people in costume?

Pollee 1: Remember that you have the right to tell someone “no” for pictures and can speak up for anyone harrassing you. Stick with fabrics you know and are comfortable using. Always test run a costume at least for several hours before wearing it the day you plan to use it; it gives you time to see if there are any flaws and/or mishaps that may crop up. Bring extra make-up and an extra make-up mirror. Don’t have your picture taken in high traffic areas.

What advice do you have for people with cameras?

Pollee 1: Always ask. ALWAYS. I know it’s being reiterated a lot, but cosplay is NOT consent. Respect the answer you get. If you have someone who’s dressed in costume of a character that does sexy or provocative poses and doesn’t want to do one for you, respect that answer too. Don’t hold up major traffic areas. Do ask if you can take more than one picture if your first one doesn’t turn out. Frequently cosplayers don’t mind a few for “just in case.” Feel free to geek out with a cosplayer about their character/game/anime/etc.

My ECCC 2017 Starbucks Experience

Ahoy hoy, Fellow Foodies!  Fresh Off of Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, I naturally have some tales to tell.  Most of these you’ve likely seen me post before, but only during my “In real time” experiment on my Facebook page on Thursday of con.  Here I am compiling them all in reverse chronological order, followed by my own original drink designs inspired by the concoctions I found this weekend and getting ready for it.

Groot Coffee

Group coffee it was something I was very glad I only had in a small size. I will try to be honest and objective, but I do not like espresso or black coffee in general.  So seeing how this was coffee on coffee flavor, there wasn’t anything for me. But if you do like the taste of coffee, I would describe this as a cold, “coffee squared” experience.  If applying exponents to flavor makes any sense to you.

Meeshe’s cream based Groot: The coffee flavor is replaced with a whipped and fluffy sweetness.  It was hard to make out the mocha drizzle.  By taste I mean.  Obviously, it stands out against the whipped cream by sight.  The first batch was a tad flavorless.

Starbucks: Modifying the Groot frap, use same amount of whole milk, then add “cream base” syrup and two hazelnut syrup pumps (for tall, 3 pumps for larger sizes).  And then the same plain cream and mocha drizzle topping.  Say “I know what I’m drinking before Guardians of the Galaxy 2.”  Also, the convention coincided with a company-wide event called “Buy one Share one” where customers could buy any Macciotto between the hours of 2 & 5PM and get one free.  I explored a couple of the outlets I knew where cashing in on the con, and while I didn’t see anyone seeming to take part in the offer, I spied some con attendees who’d made the same discovery I had.  I also couldn’t help but notice two new Machiotto flavors being promoted at the same time.  I’m sure that had NOOOTHING to do with promoting a buy one get one offer exclusively for Machiottos.

The new flavors were “Iced Cinnamon Almondmilk” and “Coconutmilk Mocha.”  My thoughts on them were as follows:  In the Iced Cinnamon Almondmilk, I could only taste the cinnamon and the espresso.  It flowed a little thicker, but was still very fluid.  Though it would have thinned considerably if I’d given all that ice time to melt.  As for the Coconutmilk Mocha, it claimed to be mocha…  But mocha is a combination of coffee and cocoa.  And all I tasted was espresso.   It’s nice and thick, though.  And the Almond milk had not only leaner consistency, but also cinnamon to make it easier to digest.

Hulk Smash! Frappucino

Sakuracon faithful, I think you’re really going to like this one. It’s the green tea frap with chips that we get at the specialty drink for that con, the Sakuracino. But it’s more filling and less crashing because of the added protein. Also the stronger chocolate flavor on account of the mocha drizzle. I’m not saying I prefer one or the other.   It’s just a nice reminder.  Though the added protein does make it better lunch fare.

Cookie Butter Bar

The Starbucks Cookie Butter Bar was described to me as being like Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter, that I admit I’ve never had before so I can’t tell.  But the bar itself had crumbled cookie bits and was separated in three layers beneath them. The top layer was cream cheese, but you can probably guess that from the picture. What you’re probably not guessing off the bat is the flavor of the cookie. It tastes very strongly of gingerbread, but it might also be Snickerdoodle. It was a rich and filling snack. But I think I’ll savor one, and wait a while for the next. Especially considering the price (and calories) of Starbucks fare.

Obviously the Franken frap taste it like mocha chocolate coffee at first cuz there was a drizzle on top the whipped cream however once you get past the dark chocolate like flavor, you taste something very minutes almost but distinctly not quite like biting into a York Peppermint Patty. As for the frap chips typically I don’t like them in my drinks because it’s so hard to get them through a straw however since I had this with a spoon they were no problem I just made the drink some of it thicker less like a less like a smooth flowing liquid almost retaining shape when you lifted it up period almost, but not quite.
So in hindsight, I think that comparison to mint chocolate chip ice cream are fair and warranted is there are actual chips in this. However a warning. When you wait whatever chips don’t stick to the side of a cup or sink to the bottom, and that is a majority, will dissolve into drink the substantially thing it out. I honestly wouldn’t mind having this again however due to the fact that fraps are cold beverages I would like to have this in warmer weather.

On one last note, some of my fellow foodies already know I have been trying to come up with original recipes based on Capcom Darkstalkers lied. So far that has been a crap shoot, but I think one big adjustment I need to make is going from video on that project to text sending something based on Frankenstein’s monster, particularly a drink, has helped me finalize what I want to do with Capcom’s most iconic Frankenstein’s monster. No, not Nemesis from Resident Evil.  This is about Darkstalkers’s own Viktor Von Gerdenheim.

In the Udon Comics he’s a big fan of hot chocolate with marshmallows. Thus a tribute to him should probably focus on that.  I’ve been trying to come up with something that is chocolatey has marshmallow topping and focuses on energy and strength. So it came to me when I was reflecting on the frappe chips in this drink. What if we combined frappe chips in a large hot chocolate like the largest available two proteins and whip cream with marshmallow syrup?

That’s actually the second idea I had. The first was another frappe which is again another cold drink in this cold weather. Cold like a corpse. That made me think of Victor after he sacrificed his Energies to revive his sister Emily. It made me think of java frappe with two helpings of protein for scoops of matcha green tea powder and marshmallow whipped cream again. Note colon scratch Java and just put in plain chocolate for the frappe version call it the little Emily and have no particular size attached.

I took a shot at my Vicor von Gurdenheim cocoa this weekend, mixing one protein with a hot cocoa,.  A friend who Supervises a local Starbucks had the following advice on mixing with frap chips: Add a quarter inch hot water to them first so that the chips will melt before they stir, and thus will not form sludge at the bottom.  I’ll definitely add that to the instructions in the future.  And maybe a photo reference to draw Victor’s head or hand on the cocoa surface.  Although I would need to bring my own marshmallows and sea salt because those are not available most of the year.  Marshmallow Whipped Cream is available over the summer for the S’mores Frap, and Sea Salt over the fall for the Sea Salted Caramel Frap.  Which means this cocoa has seasonal varieties.

I will get into the particular the Darkstalkers recipes in time for Sakuracon which would likely attract more people already familiar with that franchise. So stay tuned. And I hope you have a great weekend. And formally launch that series of essays.

New treats to try at Emerald City Comicon 2016

Another Emerald City Comicon, another collection of non-perishable snacks from home.  But this year, I thought I’d switch things up a bit by trying 6 varieties of Quaker Chewy Bars.  In the past I’ve taken Protein, Zone, and Kind bars with me but this brand will be a first.
The Strawberry Yogurt Bar as you can expect a pronounced yogurt taste given that the bottom is lined in yogurt but while rest of the bar had strawberry bits in it, this did not have definitive strawberry flavor.  The taste was something close throughout but not be actual strawberry specific flavor.  What kind of fruit is strawberry anyway? They don’t have all of the proper berry requirements. They grow off the vine yes, but their seeds are not inside, they are outside.  Tomatoes fulfill this, strawberries not so much.

The dark chocolateey bar flavor was coated in dark chocolate coated in dark chocolate. But I believe that’s where all of the chocolate flavor came from I tried looking at the nutrition facts rather the ingredients see where it began and it was hard to spot where the actual chocolate was this is very rich it seems like semi-sweet chocolate chips earliest chocolate ingredients but I don’t never saw any ships. Not in the picture in the bar not in little bite marks in the bar maybe that’s what’s melted around the bar somewhere later there’s cocoa powder it didn’t really seem that’s sweet but even less bitter I’m not sure just how semi-sweet those chips were.

As for s’mores, the marshmallows and the chocolate chips Blended their flavors together seamlessly so it was neither chocolatey nor marshmallow but something new and pleasantly distinct onto itself. Now clearly or almost certainly comma this is not the first time I’ve tasted this in a s’mores flavor bar. But like the other two options on this list this had a pleasant thickness and resistance to my drawers hence the chewy name of the bar brand. Unlike the others it was not coated and anything so I didn’t have to break something off or bite through something to get to the actual granola and the resistance and toughness there it. When I say toughness I mean something I can actually feel my muscles working against not that they were ever straining. That’s an important distinction that holds this kind of smores bar over almost any other I’ve ever had.

The oatmeal raisin was very chewy not a lot of resistance but of course I was very hungry so I was methodical and maybe more powerful than chewing typically it was just feeling tasting oatmeal but taste of the raisins was unmistakable, although faint.  The Challenge on this rapper was chili challenge 67 learn a new hobby how fast can you master it?
All right, let’s make these nest two a comparison and a side by side. Because these two are so similar I’ll be focusing more on what separates them and makes them distinct rather than their own individual merits which would be somewhat redundant. The primary qualities that I will be looking for our texture and flavor.

The chocolate chip one was surprisingly shy on chocolate chips. The peanut butter chocolate chip one was actually rich enough that you could get some chocolate flavor without needing a bite in just the right spot. So for chocolate contents and taste the point goes to the peanut butter chocolate chip bar. And of course the rest of the flavor as far as chocolate chip goes this is as close to a plane just granola oats bar as your as I have found from these things. The peanut butter one obviously tasted a bit more like peanut butter, not too strong.  I still got some good oats supposed to peanut butter and the after mentioned occasional bit of chocolate.

So let’s move on to texture I would say these are both in the middle no it’s soft not hard not gentle not firm so it’s got a bit more for everyone I guess I mean if you have sensitive teeth or are using Dentures I definitely recommend this. But to decide between the two of another so close I would definitely consider the peanut butter one more pleasant chocolate chip was more recline just separate a given point and the peanut butter chocolate chip was more inclined to collapse so longer flow leading to a better chewing experience and these bars do call themselves chewy bars that’s what they’re working on.  So that’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip 3, Chocolate Chip 0.  Peanut butter has protein, although it has plenty of fats and plenty of people are allergic to it.  So the chocolate chip is not only blander, it’s also safer.  Kind of like me on the dating circuit.  Ladies, take that with a grain of salt.

The Starbucks cookie butter bar was something I found in downtown during closing time at an outlet. I was hoping I had enough points to get me Franken frap while I waited for my bus, but I should have instead asked for the individual ingredients (see below) but again closing time so I wouldn’t have gotten it anyways so I grabbed this on my way out. It was described to me as being like Trader Joe’s cookie butter.

Experience aside, the bar itself had crumbled cookie bits and was separated in three layer underneath them. Top layer cream cheese but you can probably guess that from the picture. What you’re probably not guessing off the bat is the flavor of the cookie. It tastes very strongly of gingerbread, but it might also be Snickerdoodle. This is my first encounter with anything called cookie butter. It took me till I was walking to my bus to realize how very much like a pun the name cookie butter is. Like I said, I got it in a rush. So cookie, cookie butter, and cream cheese topped with crumbled cookies. It was a rich and filling snack. But I think I’ll savor one, and wait a while for the next. Especially considering the price of Starbucks fare.
