Marvel Monday on a Tuesday, Happy World Tarot Day.

Marie-Ange Colbert, or Tarot as she’s more widely known, was rallied by Emma Frost to form her Counter Force against the teenage New Mutants. For World Tarot Day, I’d like not to do this on a Monday.

To summarize the Hellions as a group, they were teenagers assembled to parallel/mirror different power sets of Xavier’s then-teenage students. Her own abilities (reading the future and summoning Henchmen with her namesake Tarot Cards) seemed to best parody Mirage or Magik. Staying on after the departures of Firestar, Empath and Thunderbird, Tarot was part of the attack on the New Warriors to repossess Firestar. And alongside newcomers Beef and Bevatron, wiped out with the entire Hellions team by Trevor Fitzroy. She was the only member resurrected to form the next team of Hellions, composed of departed members and newcomers with similar powers.

Which gets us to where I’m scratching my head. The New Mutants had been reforged as X-Force, primarily to battle the ones responsible for the then-topical Legacy Virus. Seems like a good time to join Cable and company, especially since it was Emma operating under the official Xavier Banner, if Marie-Ange wanted to keep her distance from both. Instead, where have we seen her? Getting resurrected again by Selene. Apparently she couldn’t stay alive without her Necromancer. But I recall specifically that when lists were printed of who had been depowered when Wanda Maximoff cast the …controversial “No More Mutants” spell. So I was a little surprised to see her undead during the Necrosha event. Even more so, when she was given new life, her appearances have only been sporadic. Only 30 appearances over nearly 40 years? How the mighty have fallen…
